Joe Sewell
#21 | Shortstop | Cleveland Indians

Joseph Wheeler Sewell

Joe Sewell

Along with teammate Earl Averill, Sewell is one of the worst players selected to the Hall of Fame. He was put there by a sympathetic Veterans Committee 44 years after he retired.  He was a decent hitter, topping .300 in 10 of 14 seasons, and struck out just 114 for his entire career.  He whiffed but three times in both 1930 and 1932, and he struck out only four times on three other occasions.

The speedy shortstop led the American League in fielding twice and in putouts and assists four times.  His career was solid but not exactly Hall caliber - remember, playing in League Park with it's short fences helped boost his offensive totals.  He never won a batting title, never led the league in home runs, RBIs, runs scored, slugging percentage - in fact, the only major category in which he did lead the league was caught stealing (16 in 191927).
